In New York, waar de globale regenboogbeweging begon, ervaarden ze de activistische roots van Pride. Zoals veel getuigen vertelden: Pride moet niet enkel een parade zijn, maar ook een protest – zoals vroeger. In deze aangrijpende documentaire getuigen gays, queers en mensen van kleur over discriminatie – ook binnen de LGBTQ gemeenschap – maar tonen ze ook hun enorme veerkracht en creatief protest. ENG – Marieke Dermul and Filip Tielens travelled to New York to attend the biggest Pride ever, 50 years after the Stonewall uprising. In their documentary ‘Pride is Protest!’ they ask the question: what are LGBTQ people fighting for today?
In New York, where the global rainbow movement started, they experienced the activist roots of Pride. As many interviewees responded: Pride should not only be a parade, but also a protest – like in the early days. In their documentary, gays, queers and people of colour testify about discrimination – even within the LGBTQ community – but also show their enormous strength and creative protest. The riot goes on!

Met het Creative Lab van VRT werkte ze samen voor ‘Politieke Partijen uitgelegd’. Voor de documentaire voorstelling ‘European Citizen Popsong’ ontving ze een nominatie voor de Filipa Bragança Award op het Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

ENG – Filip Tielens (° 1989) is a journalist for De Standaard, VRT / Klara and the multimedia collective De Zendelingen, with a focus on (performing) arts and LGBTQ themes. As a storyteller, he is always looking for fascinating stories and the best form to show them to an audience.
